ABOUT / How this came to be

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away… actually, it was in Wisconsin in 1998…

“My [Kristin’s] sister, Kathy, asked me to be my nephew Kyle’s godmother. I was thrilled by the honor, yet apprehensive. Reluctantly I told her that I would love to be Kyle’s godmother, but I no longer considered myself to be “Christian,” rather I considered myself to be “spiritual” instead. I believed in a creative force (or God), but I enjoyed learning from all religions. This included Christianity, but my exploration of spirituality now embraced the good and valuable teachings wherever I found them. If I was to take on the role, I would want to explore all beliefs with Kyle.

 

Kathy paused and said, “Well, the title says ‘godmother’, not ‘Christian mother,’ so that should be fine.”

 

Little did I know that one conversation would change my life so much!…”

Yadda, yadda, yadda… I went to work writing a book on spirituality for my nephew. (Read the full story on the Unpuzzling Spirituality website.) About 20 years later Kristin Neperud Merz and Dena Mercer have completed their book, “Unpuzzling Spirituality: An Introduction to Spiritual Thoughts to Create a Big, Happy, Peaceful, and Loving Life (Ages 9 and up)” {Status update: we are currently in the final content editing stage. Estimated publication date is: June 26, 2019}

In the process of preparing to promote our book, I kept thinking there could be more to the promoting than just our book. What felt like “in a flash” concepts and ideas for “Big Heart Living” came pouring into my mind. I mean pouring in! ▣

The promotion of the book morphed into two projects:

1. a website and some focused promotions of Unpuzzling Spirituality, and
2. by using core concepts from Unpuzzling Spirituality and broadening what we would talk about, I decided to create Big Heart Living,

Now, I could easily reach beyond the confines of our book and share additional ideas to bring peace, love, and happiness. I could promote other people doing things to spread peace, love, and happiness. And, I could use my design and marketing skills I have built up over the years as a designer, writer, illustrator, and communicator – which would fill me with a lot of peace, love, and happiness! And it soooo does. ▣

And truth be told, the Universe conspired to provide time to do it! So, I am working my butt off to create ways to KEEP doing this. (Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!)

What is spirituality? How does spirituality relate to my life? How do I develop spiritual beliefs? How can I use my spiritual beliefs in my every day life? What is death? Understanding your spirituality can feel like you are putting together a puzzle without a picture to guide you. Unpuzzling Spirituality invites the reader to explore answers to these questions and more. It helps the reader to put the pieces of the puzzle together to create a big, happy, peaceful, purposeful, and loving life.

Exploring your spirituality is a journey that can help you to figure out who you are, who you can be, and how you can understand and make a difference in the world around you.
